I am fortunate to have been under the care of Mr Naylor since January 2019 for Recurrent Corneal Erosion Syndrome (RCES). From the first time we met I found him very approachable and easy to relate to. He instils confidence in you as the patient, makes you feel he has time for any questions and carefully explains everything in a way that can be easily understood. I first came into contact with him at the Hull Eye Hospital and then, when he moved to York District Hospital, I transferred to remain under his care, such was my confidence in him. He also arranged for me to attend St James' Hospital in Leeds where he performed a PTK laser procedure on my eye. RCES is a very unpleasant condition and laser procedures can cause stress and concern for the patient (although it is not nearly as bad as you think and the procedure itself is totally painless). Mr Naylor's calm, patient, sympathetic disposition makes the experience a lot less frightening. He is a very good doctor and a very nice human being and I can't recommend him highly enough. Over the past 15 years I have seen 3 eye consultants, all telling me my eyes were to small for corrective surgery plus many other reasons. My prescription was +10.5 in both eyes , one being a toric contact lense, and my left eye I was classed as being partially sighted, having to use reading glasses over my contact lenses just to read. I have worn glasses since I was 5 and contact lenses for the past 38 years since being 15. When I moved to Bridlington a year ago little did I realise that a year later I would have perfect eye sight. I saw an advert about Mr Naylor and the Eye Hospital in Hull before Christmas 2018 and I messaged Mr Naylor, and I made an appointment to see him in January 2019. On first meeting I was instantly put at ease , with Mr Naylor listening to my eye history and him explaining what the plan would be to move forward. I left feeling very hopeful. After a couple of meetings my surgery was booked, my work schedule altered to work around my eyes, having 10 days off work incorporating my right eye surgery then a week later my left eye. The right eye lens extraction and implant went very smoothly , I’d describe it as a feeling of an eye headache! Which soon passed and I could instantly see, reading the posters on the walls, small print on paperwork , it was and still is amazing. I followed the aftercare eye drops without fail, and the left eye was operated on 7 days later. I was able to drive the next day , 3 different after care drops everyday for 4 weeks and my eyes are just perfect, awesome, fantastic. I understood that someone like me with the size eyes I have , with flat corneas, and a bad asthmatic cough there are risks, a cough from me could leave me without sight. Thanks to Mr Naylor’s skills my life has changed , being able to see without putting in contact lenses or wearing glasses. My partner was not so happy when after seeing him clearly for the very first time I gave him some anti wrinkle cream!!! Then I saw dust on the tv , cobwebs in the bathroom ............. All I can say is that I’m so grateful to Mr Steven Naylor and the staff who helped in both my operations, I am eternally grateful to now have what so many take for granted- the ability to see.

Profile

Born and raised in Hull, I was proud to graduate with honours from Leeds Medical School in 2008 as one of the top performing medical students of my year. I completed my ophthalmology training in Yorkshire where I was amongst the first of my trainee cohort to achieve the coveted CertLRS for refractive surgery, a testament to my ambition and determination to strive to be the best. To further my expertise I undertook a year of advanced sub-specialty training in cornea and refractive surgery at St James's University Teaching Hospital, one of Europe's largest teaching hospitals. My training has afforded me a wealth and depth of experience in precision eye care, and an uncompromising attitude towards the delivery of an outstanding patient experience. I always put my patients first.
I am the NHS consultant lead for cataract surgery at York Teaching Hospital. I also co-run the emergency eye care service. I regularly teach medical students and surgical trainees, I am a trainer on the microsurgical skills course run by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and I am the college tutor for York trainee ophthalmologists.
I specialise in complex cataract surgery and intraocular lens work. I have performed over 4000 cataract operations with visual outcomes surpassing the national standards cited by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. My experience in emergency eye care means I am very skilled in dealing with a wide range of eye problems. Now residing in York my hard work, integrity and professionalism have enabled me to establish a successful private practice working at both the Nuffield Hospital in York and the Spire Hospital in Hull.
I consider myself very fortunate to call the beautiful county of Yorkshire my home and in my spare time regularly enjoy country walks and bike rides with my wife, children and dog.
